Smoke Filled Sky

Posted by
Sandy Weston (Maine, United States) on 22 January 2010 in Cityscape & Urban.

One summer afternoon we looked up from our picnic table and noticed our downtown area had a lot of very dark smoke arising from it. We loaded up in the car and went downtown.

Oooooooooo, and what was burning?

PS: I was thinking about you when a cousin in BC sent me a link on snowflake photography by a man in VT, who began in 1885 ... you might enjoy reading it.

I like the dramatic effect the smoke provides in your shot today. The deep treatment of the cars and foreground fits the atmosphere very well.

Real life photo. Hope no damage done?

@Garfield: The building was for sale and empty —huge riverfront property.....and was made of brick mostly....it burned to the ground....brick crumbled down .......a big mess and still not touched after the fire....

The Big Guy from Regina, Canada

Not good, there is some cause for concern. Did you get up close for some real photojournalizm?

22 Jan 2010 9:22pm

@The Big Guy: This photo was just taken from the road on the other side of the stick mill....not blocked off....still open to traffic. The next shot was from me getting closer by coming up next to a neighbors house which was right there where I was. The large neighborhood was right there and surprising it didn't spread to any homes.

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

I like added drama that the power lines gives this.

@Ralph Jones: I know.....against the sky....made it look different.
