Smoke Filled Sky #2

Posted by
Sandy Weston (Maine, United States) on 23 January 2010 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

While driving downtown to find where the fire was we took photos of how dark the sky was because of the thick smoke. It was not the Madison Paper Mill on fire as we thought but the Anson Stick Mill which was across from there.

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Fantastic compostion with these lines on the smoke of the sky. Good colors.

@Paco Díaz: Thanks Paco :)

Judy from Brooksville, Florida, United States

Smoke adds such interesting colors to the sky ... you captured this well.
I had to look to see what "Anson Stick Mill" is and see they make folding wooden rules ... of course! :D
Hopefully the mill wasn't destroyed in the fire.

@Judy: Sorry to say it did destroy the mill. And it was started by some teens that were in there fooling around.

Florence from Paris, France

Fire really creates specific sky... yours is really dramatic...

@Florence: Thank you Florence :)

The Big Guy from Regina, Canada

A mill and a bunch of kids!! Wonder if the felt any remorse after they did what they did? Good photojournalism.

23 Jan 2010 3:43pm

@The Big Guy: I'm not sure what ended up with that...but it is still there and falling apart.

Cool shot Sandy, the back story is reminiscent of another era. The sirens run 24/7/365 here, so calamity goes largely unnoticed.

23 Jan 2010 4:45pm

@ordinaryimages: I know....here we all have scanner going 24/7 and being a rural area we all know each other and thus know everything that's going on. My daughter lives in the middle of Oakland, CA...going to school there....and you add helicopters on top of it all you have chaos.....she says you get used to it....but I'm not sure I could.

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

Great shot! Smoke can make some amazing, dramatic light, but too bad about the mill. Hopefully they can recover!

23 Jan 2010 4:57pm

@Tracy: They have been thinking of putting a park there....but in this commercial area would be a disappointment because we need more business downtown.....there's plenty of parks and public areas around the town already....

don from Spokane, United States

There is something very oppressive about the color of that smoke. A fine capture of the atmosphere!

23 Jan 2010 5:30pm

@don: Very oppressive especially since it was very humid that day too....

B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United States

From your shot, I can almost smell the smoke. Good capture.

24 Jan 2010 12:24am

@B. Thomas: Thanks Barbara :)

Ralph Jones from Detroit, United States

Nice!

@Ralph Jones: Thanks

gautam from new delhi, India

a moment of disaster captured so gracefully

@gautam: It's called "small town common interest"....you don't always know your neighbor until something happens and then they're there for you to help you out in times of need ;)
